Kia ora everyone!
The New Zealand job market has definitely taken a turn. Recent data from SEEK shows a 40% drop in advertised vacancies year on year – ouch! While this kind of change isn't unheard of, it can be pretty unsettling, especially for those new to the workforce.
Having been in the recruitment game since 1994 (yes, I've seen a few market cycles!), I can assure you that this isn't the first downturn we've weathered. In fact, I'm counting this as my fifth!
So, if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, here are five tips to help you not only survive, but thrive, in a challenging job market:
- This too shall pass: Remember, the market is cyclical. Things will improve, it's just a matter of time. However, unlike the rapid rebound after Covid, this recovery is likely to be more gradual. Instead of a hiring frenzy, expect a slow and steady return to normalcy over a couple of years. Patience is key!
- Flexibility is your friend: The more open you are to different types of roles and working arrangements, the wider your options. Consider different locations, contract roles, or even a temporary step back or sideways move. Compromise might be necessary, but it can open up unexpected opportunities.
- Be proactive, not reactive: In a downturn, you can't sit back and wait for the perfect job to find you. It's time to dust off your network, reach out to former colleagues and bosses, and let recruiters know you're on the hunt. Set up job alerts on SEEK, Indeed, Trade Me, and LinkedIn, and apply for roles that spark your interest.
- Keep your recruiters in the loop: Regularly touch base with the recruiters you're working with, so they know you're actively looking. Make sure they have your updated CV and career goals, and don't be afraid to check in with them for market insights and potential leads.
- Go face-to-face: Nothing beats a good old-fashioned in-person meeting. Whenever possible, meet with potential employers, recruiters, and agencies face-to-face. Attend networking events and build those relationships – you never know where they might lead.
A few final thoughts: Remember, the job market is always changing, and your career path may take unexpected twists and turns. Embrace the unpredictability, stay resilient, and use this time to explore new possibilities. After all, who knows what exciting adventures lie ahead?
Would your 18-year-old self have predicted where you are today?
