Hiring in a Talent Short Market

Denita Preston • July 25, 2022

By now you’re probably tired of hearing ‘talent short’ to describe the current labour market. Job vacancies are high, applications are low and employers are eager to snatch up the best talent. So, how can you hire the best employee in a talent short market?

Hire Fast

Now is not the time for lengthy, unnecessarily drawn out interview processes. It’s likely, your preferred applicant is receiving constant calls for enticing opportunities. The longer the process, the more likely your star applicant will be swept up by another employer. Keep the interview process as tight as possible and be prompt with the follow up. Swift, decisive action making an offer of employment, will ensure the best talent, is secured fast.

Know Your Applicants

What are your ideal job seekers really wanting for themselves? What are their underlying motivations? Whether it’s flexibility, work life balance, purpose driven work, or long-term growth, understanding what motivates these job seekers will assist them to know their objectives are being heard and therefore leading to them to envisage a future with your organisation.

What Sets You Apart?

Take some time to share and communicate what’s unique about your business. Simply reading out your mission statement isn’t going to cut it! The best talent want to know what it’s like to work in your business, who are the people they’re working alongside and what type of culture they’d be stepping into. Be genuine, give examples and open the floor for questions to give job seekers the opportunity to connect with you and your business. And remember, if they seem like a good fit, lock in the next steps quickly (before someone else does!)
