What's up dog?

Kaya came to me as an 8 week old puppy. Being at work full-time meant that I could only care for all her needs properly if she was at work with me. Thankfully, my employer was understanding and allowed her to be in the Laboratory, where I work. She soon became our "Lab dog". I initially intended for her to
not be seen/noticed too much or be paid to much attention to, so as not to inconvenience others at work or within the building. But she turned out to have such a big character that everyone loved patting her and saying hello. She greets everyone that comes into work with rhythmic tail wags that vibrates her office crate, and subsequently the whole floor. The people downstairs must know whenever she is excited though I'm not sure I want them to make the connection to me on why their ceiling often shakes. When she wants to, she can also be a quiet ninja such that the delivery men do not even notice that there is a dog just a few meters from them.

Kaya's big character which brings big smiles and friendly conversation reaches beyond the office, and also to all on the floor and building. Training 2-3 times a day meant that she was often meeting others in the elevator, stairwell, and at the office carpark. People from 4 floors up have said that they loved seeing her grow up from puppy to teenager, and look forward to seeing her whenever their paths cross.

She offers her belly for rubs to everyone who says hello, to the point where I doubt she will ever be a good guard dog. Kaya has indeed made her mark and had her belly rubbed by those in the building, as well as others she sees to and from the car daily, about 2km away.

If you spot a blue heeler in Dunedin with a lady who seems to have a treat bag constantly attached to her waist, you are likely to smile while trying to avoid eye contact and saying hello in a high-pitched voice so as not to distract the obvious training in-progress. However, after a few seconds, you will almost probably cave in to taking a peek, and immediately realise that the feeling is reciprocated by a very excited Blue heeler who has rolled over on the ground offering her belly to you. Then you will oblige, but not stay long because by then you will potentially be half apologetic for interrupting the training session, but the other half would be overflowed with happiness that your day has been made by the goofiest of dogs - that is Kaya.
