Meet Arlo
Breed: English Cocker Spaniel
Barking from: Auckland
What's up dog?
I was born with Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, a condition that gradually weakens my muscles. As I've grown older, I've had more falls and now rely heavily on my wheelchair. When I turned 21, I decided it was time to find a furry companion who could help me with daily tasks giving me more independence.
I had my heart set on a spaniel, but there weren't any available nearby until Arlo, a lively blonde English Cocker Spaniel, who unexpectedly came into my life. From the moment we met, we became inseparable.
At just 25 weeks old, Arlo has already proven himself to be an incredible companion. He comes to work with me at Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku every day, where he's adored by my colleagues. They spoil him with attention and take him out for breaks, which he absolutely loves.
Arlo's favorite morning routine involves visiting our local café, where he eagerly watches every customer who comes through the door. He has a little habit of expecting a "Tummy Tax" from everyone'meaning a good belly scratch is a must! It's no surprise that the locals find him utterly charming. He sits beside me in his own chair at the cafe, quietly observing everything around him with his curious eyes.
Around our office and town, Arlo is affectionately known as the "Town Mascot." He even has his own Instagram page where people can keep up with his adventures. During our walks, we work on his social skills, and he loves meeting new people and greeting familiar faces who know him by name. He's a quick learner and, of course, a very good boy, just as every proud dog mom would say.
There have been moments when I've fallen, and Arlo has stayed right by my side, barking to alert others until help arrives. It's something we've been working on together since day one.
As Arlo continues his training, I look forward to the day when he can assist me with everyday tasks like fetching items, helping with laundry, and alerting others when I need assistance. He's already made such a positive impact on my life, and we take care of each other every step of the way.
Arlo isn't just my dog; he's my little sidekick and best friend. Together, we bring each other endless joy and support, in ways that go beyond words.
