Wink

Breed: Heading Dog

Barking from: Invercargill

What's up dog?

Wink is a pest detection dog. He’s an expert at sniffing out Spartina grass. Spartina is a grassy weed that grows in the bare intertidal zone. It forms dense clumps and traps sediment which raises the level of the ground above the high tide mark, destroying the habitat for native wildlife such as shellfish and wading birds.

After missing out on a job as a heading dog due to an eye problem, Wink’s story is a reminder of the hidden potential in all things. He moved on and his new career has taken off in leaps and bounds! After intensive training and certification, Wink and his owner, John, have spent the last 4 years working across NZ from Invercargill to Whangarei, protecting our unique environment in Aotearoa.

On behalf of our TOPDOG team at Frog Recruitment, Indeed, and Jet Park Hotels, thank you to everyone for entering the 2023 edition of NZTOPDOG.

This year's campaign has been an absolute treat to watch, and we are thrilled to have shone the spotlight on the postitive impact dogs can make on our mental health, in and our of the workplace. The last few months have been about celebrating our furry best friends and shedding some light on their paw-some work. While each entry was uniquely different, the one thing they all had in common was that having your tail-wagging pal around had helped improve your mental health.
